The day the Drake flew at me.

April 29, 2009.

20090429.

Occasion, his mate was nesting,  at the edge of the pond, behind some branches.  The pond appeared empty, and the Drake would run any newcomers off.  This day, he tried to run me off, but I did not realize it at the time.

and he was defending the pond.  One day I watched him run off seven other Drakes, but that is a story for another day.  This day, he was facing a new family, after the hatching, that was trying to occupy the same pond.  Suddenly, eyeing me, he began to charge.

Here you see the hopping, going into flying, action of a confronting Drake.

These are fun to look at, and were fun to shoot.  I do not commonly print them as cards.

Beginning to lift off the water, he seems to be starting to turn.

Now the Drake is turning more, and beginning to look a little concerned. Goose Protocol, or Good Goose Manners, say that the party being flown at should retreat.

I just kept taking pictures, it not registering to me he might be warning me off.

Now he turns more, and frankly looks a little concerned.  (This is the only picture in this series I have offered as a four-fold greeting card.  The others on this page can be printed as cards, at your request.)

This is a fairly close turn of the approaching Canada Goose.  I have followed him with my telephoto as he banked to the left.   Every time I see this I laugh out loud, (or at least chuckle.)

Final picture in this series, just before he landed.   I don't know if this might make a good card, but I know I like it.

09918139 Drake Defending Nest Area 20090410

This is the get off my pond mode.   I was there the day this Drake drove off seven other Drakes from his pond.  (Goose Feather Pond.)  I have pictures of his mate on her nest.

Typical action is to fly at the opponent, and their job is to try to get away.

Goose etiquette demands that if one Goose is attacking, the other is supposed to fee.  There are exceptions.

In the above pictures on this page,  I stood my ground, not realizing he might be attacking, and it became the Drakes job to turn away from me.  I have seen them in full attack, and do not really recommend staying around.  I was just too stupid to leave.

Really, I think you are seeing a gift of God, and not something from my ability.   I am neither as joyful or as delightful as these pictures are.  They seem to bless others,  and I also feel His love when I look at them.     Spent a lot of time with the Geese, last year, learning photography from my mistakes.  Look around in the index, there are many other subjects.   I typically pick the best of the best of my pictures, and treat each of them as if they were a painting, as I was trained to paint them.
